Course One, The Students We Have, examines the current landscape of basic needs insecurity in higher education. Through five chapters, the course challenges traditional assumptions about today’s college students and provides a deeper understanding of who they are and the everyday struggles they face in meeting their basic needs. Some barriers stem from institutional practices that can be reformed, while others are systemic and require broader strategies to navigate. Regardless of the source of these obstacles, this course offers an opportunity to enhance your awareness and develop practical skills that contribute to greater student success.
Before beginning the course, we kindly ask you to complete the pre-assessment. This assessment is designed to gauge your current level of knowledge and confidence in supporting students experiencing basic needs insecurity. The questions will help us evaluate your ability to identify key indicators of student need and your preparedness to engage in collective action to address these challenges.
